Recently, the technical team of ARTECH CNC Company completed a complete tool selection solution for an overseas sculpture producer’s KUKA milling robot arm. Based on rich practical experience in robotic sculpture carving, engineers selected matched cutting tools according to the customer’s working conditions of foam sculptures and solid wood crafts, maximizing the performance of robotic milling equipment.
The customer specializes in customized large artistic foam sculptures and 3D solid wood statues. They adopt KUKA robotic arms equipped with high-speed spindles for three-dimensional carving. During preliminary communication, the client reported multiple production troubles caused by inappropriate cutting tools, including broken edges on foam workpieces, excessive burrs on wood sculptures and rapid tool wear, which harmed machining accuracy and productivity.
After receiving the request, ARTECH CNC engineers carried out in-depth research on the customer’s materials, workpiece dimensions and processing procedures. Different tool combinations were arranged for rough carving of foam, fine detail processing and curved surface carving of solid wood.
Single-flute cutters with large chip grooves are used for rough machining of EPS foam to avoid material melting caused by cutting heat. Small ball nose end mills are applied for precise carving of human figure curved surfaces to guarantee smooth complex contours. Cemented carbide spiral cutters are selected for solid wood processing to reduce burrs.
In addition, the technical team offered recommended cutting parameters, including feed rate and spindle speed, to minimize vibration during robotic milling and balance carving precision and tool service life. After on-site test cutting, the customer achieved intact sculpture details, improved processing efficiency and less frequent tool replacement.
